Define a problem
We made a gantt chart and divided up responsibilities so that when it came down to time management we could get the project done efficiently. Also we did it so if something wasn't done we could play the blame game and find out who it was that didnt do that part of the project.
Brainstorming
WE thought to use different materials to take advantage of capillary action. a shoelace, yarn, paper towels, a rag, and lacrosse string
Research and generate ideas
Explore possibilites
select an approch
develop design proposal
make a model/ test and evaluate
during these test i discovered that our purifier works very well but the problem is that it takes a long time to purify out the water. the problem that happens if u let it sit for too long it will infinitely purify its self so it might end up back in the cup that has the dirt in it. the water would be clear but there would be dirt in the bottom as u can see from or pictures, but that wouldn't make it dirty we got a turbidity of 24 with dirt in the bottom of the cup.
refine the design
throughout our project we didn't need to refine the design of it. the only thing that we did to change it was brade the rope so that we could have multiple pieces of it in the cup at once to speed up the process.
conclusion
this project was very easy. the idea of the water filter i used wasn't time consuming and was a fun project to do to get back in to the school year. this project reminded me of freshman year engineering because this project was very hands on and fun and i hope this is how the rest of the year will turn out. The time limit that was given was a lot longer than expected which was really nice considering we just got back. I also liked how easy this project was. as soon as i heard you say we were filtering dirt out of water i knew exactly what to. the idea popped in my head because i saw a video so long ago . Next time though I would like to try a more complex system, because the one i did took little to no effort and was too easy. To make this project better for students I would make them drink the water that they filtered out. this is some more motivation to get their project working so they don't have to drink dirty water. but in all seriousness i would make them do some more research on materials because there's a lot of items that make good water purifiers and too many people just gave up after it stopped working the first couple times.
